20 Hours

I came across this YouTube video once, it talked about 20 hrs of deliberate practice. The idea is to give something 20 solid hours to start with. You will be surprised how good you get at it. It was mostly concerning hobbies like 'playing guitar' or 'chess'.

I have found the idea useful in the context of computer science a lot. Especially learning new technologies. Just give 20 hours of focused time and you will realise a lot.

First, you will get started with something. 20 hours is not that big of a commitment. But still, enough time to truly explore a new field. That is a big deal. Many people just stay confused at the start line and never really get anywhere.

The true benefit is that you understand what it takes to be top 5% or top 1% in the field. In most fields, you can reach the top in less time than you imagine. You realise that the top 5% of people worked hard in sprints, got to a level, and are just coasting. Even the ones still working hard are up against the law of diminishing returns. With focused work, you can get there quicker and fly right past them.
